Originally from Iran and based in Australia since 2019, Ali is one of Football Australia's full-time referees and among the most decorated match officials in the world. He refereed at the 2018 and 2022 FIFA World Cups and has been appointed to the 2026 tournament.
His finals include the 2015 AFC Asian Cup, the 2016 Olympic gold medal match, and both the 2015 and 2025 FIFA Club World Cup finals. He has twice been named Asian Referee of the Year.
